Student Body
The Alaska Virtual Academy serves full-time students in grades K-8 who are official residents of the state of Alaska. Because they are part of the public school system, the Alaska Virtual Academy is available to all district residents’ tuition free. The entire K¹² curriculum is provided free of charge, as well as a loaner computer, printer, and Internet reimbursement. However, students and families are responsible for providing some consumable materials (such as printer ink and paper).
Why students enroll?
John Gutman the head of the Alaska Virtual Academy stated that a lot of students “enrolled in the virtual school because their location in Alaska, variety of subjects offered, regular schools were not working for them and parents wanted more involvement in their child’s education” (Gutman, 2012).
